Makeup artist Codi McMurray-Young in semi-finals

11407129_873586462709805_4210803236914200279_nMakeup artist Codi McMurray-Young is one step closer to taking part in NZ Fashion Week.

“I enjoy doing makeup because I get to make people feel happy and feel good about them-selves.  Movie makeup is heaps of fun because I get to make someone’s dream a reality.

The 18-year-old from Inglewood has been picked from hundreds of entries as one of five semi-finalists for the HITO Hot New Talent Competition which is part of NZ Fashion Week.

“I saw it on facebook. I said to Mum maybe I should enter.  I then completely forgot about it until I went to Mums and read an email saying congratulations you got into the top 5.  I got really excited.

“They said in their email there were 100s and 100s of entries so it was pretty amazing to be hand-picked for the top five.”

It is now down to the public to vote to determine the final three in each category.  Voting will be open from Friday 7th August to Friday 14th August.

“NZ Fashion Week is the first competition that I have ever entered.  It is really exciting but really, really hard as well.  It’s about who you know and how many people you know.  I definitely really need the votes and shares.

“Hopefully I will get enough likes go to Auckland and help out with the NZ Fashion Week and show everyone my skills.”

Known as Codi Judith on Facebook the Inglewood High School ex-pupil has gone on to complete a WITT Course after finishing High School in 2014.

“I graduated from my course at the end of last term.  I completed the fashion makeup and artistry course at WITT.  It was a 17 week course and it teaches you the basics of makeup and hair styling.

Make-up has played a big part in Codi’s life from an early age.

“I started working for a company called Nutrimetics.  I used to sell their makeup and skin care products as well as use them.  They also had lots of makeup classes.

“The other thing that really got me into it was You-Tube.  Watching the makeup talent on is incredible.  I just want to be a part of it.  I watch Shaaanxo, Lauren Curtis and Lisa Eldridge.”

Codi is so passionate about makeup artistry that she has done quite a bit of volunteer work.

“I represented WITT volunteering for Make-A-Wish Foundation, doing face painting at St Joseph’s School holiday programme and also other WITT events.

“I’m planning on volunteering for the Look Good, Feel Better when they come around again.  It is a charity for patients going through cancer treatment where they get supplied a makeup kit and we do their makeup and they get to keep all the products.  I am really looking forward to that.”

Codi is looking forward to her next step on her career path as she enrols in the Special Effects Makeup Course at Weltec in Wellington starting in March 2016.

“I will get to learn how to use prosthetics, wigs, trim facial hair and learn how to do really, really intricate sculpting and body painting as well which is something I am really looking forward to.

“I am looking forward to the course and meeting new people and also learning how far I can push my skills and further my career.  I am not looking forward to how much it is actually going to cost but it will be well worth it in the end.”

For now she works part-time for her father and can be booked through her Facebook page “Codi Judith – Makeup Artist”.

“I take bookings through my facebook and friends.  My part-time job is actually at Merric cars cleaning cars and looking after the yard.  It’s not exactly my ideal job but I am saving my money to help towards expenses for next year.”

“I made this look to represent how we can reuse metal. Recycling is great and you can make a lot of beautiful things with stuff most people would throw away.”
